it compiled like a breeze over here (running slackware 7 with newest
version of glib &
gtk )
ran very well too .. allthough a bug that i fixed back when dillo was
gzilla is back :)
(as your first action : select bookmarks -> add bookmark ...
'segmentation fault' )
i'll see if i can fix it again (it shouldn't be so hard)

i still notice that sometimes dillo starts taking a lot of cpu power (it
doesn't appear to be
doing anything though). I've noticed this with other versions of dillo
too.

congratulations on fixing the image code .. i could now surf to
http://www.tuxedo.org/~esr/ and
see all jpgs and png's :)

[Dillo-dev]New release & documentation

From: Jorge Arellano Cid <jcid@ma...> - 2000-02-04 02:59

Hi!

Fresh news for you:

+ Just released dillo-0.0.5.tar.gz (DL. from website)
+ There're several improvements (read the Changelog)
+ Made minor updates to the web site
+ Wrote some documentation (attached with this mail)

Well, before you download the source, let me tell you that
this release features a couple of progress bars, but *don't
expect them to work*, that will be fixed later. The problem is
that they were developed while I was changing the image fetching
routines... When I finish that, they'll get right.

The second thing you should be aware of, is that although
rendering is significatively improved, stability is very fragile.
No, that's not due to rendering, but to socket abort handling. As
a matter of fact, Dillo-0.0.5 is very stable on local networks.

Needless to say, I'll focus on finishing the image fetching
stuff, write some more docs, and then get to the sockets part.

Finally, here I quote the notes I took while reviewing Dillo
widget code, they are to be completed, corrected and improved.
They were useful for me, so let's share them!

------------
DILLO WIDGET
------------

------
Resize
------

Widget resizing and repainting can be initiated by
Dw_gtk_view_request_resize and Dw_gtk_view_request_paint
functions. The resizing process is carried by an idle function
(Dw_gtk_view_idle_func) that's launched upon request.

Using an idle function to do it ensures good performance,
as long as the resizing stuff gets done when the browser is not
doing anything else.

To start the resizing, a_Dw_request_parent_resize must be
called, but beware, this routine is not a straightforward
invocation of the widget method. Rather, it uses a resize flag
mechanism; if the widget's resize flag was already set, nothing
happens but, if not, the flag is set and the request_resize
method on the widget parent is called.
The actual resize is done later, by an idle function that
discriminates upon those flags.
The resize flag is cleared later by a_Dw_size_nego_y.

The horizontal and vertical size methods are a_Dw_size_nego_x
and a_Dw_size_nego_y. They call the appropriate widget-class
method. For instance: if you call a_Dw_size_nego_x(wdg) and wdg
is of type DwPage, then Dw_page_size_nego_x will be called.

a_Dw_size_nego_x is called with the widget and requested width
as parameters. a_Dw_size_nego_y is called with the widget and,
width & height inside an allocation structure (that's why
size_nego_x method isn't implemented sometimes). Anyway, the size
negotiation sequence calls a_Dw_size_nego_x first, and after that
it calls a_Dw_size_nego_y. If size_nego_x is NULL, there's no
problem, but size_nego_y must be defined.

Some vars:

y_ascent = image height
y_descent = 0 (for images)
x_size = gdk_string_width(gdkfont, text) | widget width

-------
Repaint
-------

Dw_gtk_view_request_paint gets called whenever a child widget
needs a repaint (generally issued as the request_paint method of
the container class). The repaint rectangle is added to the
request repaint region, and an idle process is started to repaint
it if necessary (Dw_gtk_view_idle_func).

The interesting fact is that Dw_gtk_view_idle_func performs
both, resizing and repainting.

------------------
Rewrap (new stuff)
------------------

The rewrap stuff is not completely designed yet. What I
implemented is a workaround that's somewhere between a hack and a
clean patch; Yes, it's a tradeoff that lets the browser handle
image resizes, and is tuned enough to be very fast.

The rewrap function is set in Dw_page_request_resize as an
idle function; that way, a single rewrap is done, instead of one
per image resize. Even more, if the image is cached, there's no
rewrap call cause the image size is already known.

How is it done?
a_Dw_image_size function requests a parent resize. When the
resize-request reaches the top class, resize methods are called;
that way, Dw_page_request_resize is run (at its turn). Inside
Dw_page_request_resize, the page's rewrap-request-flag is set and
an idle rewrap is launched.

Hi!
Is there anybody out there? :-)

Well, finally the image rendering bug is fixed; that made a big
change in Dillo (and a lot of work and changes in the inside).
Tomorrow will be testing time, and you can expect a new release
soon (maybe three or four days, gimme' some feedback).

Current changelog looks like this:

- * Added progress bars (to be improved)
Patch: James McCollough, Jorge Arellano Cid
- * Rearranged, changed and commented the decompressed image cache code
* Fixed autoconf stuff to include zlib
* Added memory deallocating functions to cache, dicache, socket, http & dns
* Fixed memory leaks in jpeg.c, png.c and gif.c
* Made several changes in dw_page.c
* Made several "standarizing" changes all over the code.
* Introduced ist.hsource
* Fixed image rendering (Fixed algorithms and data structures)
Patches: Jorge Arellano Cid <jcid@ma...>
- * Added support for extand inkcolors inside <BODY> tags
* Standarized all memory management to glib functions
* Fixed the plugin API to work again (forked)
* Removed a warning (remove not implemented for Dw_view and Dw_scroller)
* Solved the page-without-title bug in bookmarks.
Patches: Luca Rota <drake@fr...>

Best regards
Jorge.-
